We also had rich conversations about social expectations for different public settings. How does one move safely in a parking lot? How do we enter different shops? How do we handle merchandise? Is it ok to play with things we have not paid for? Is it ok to put an item down in a different place than we found it? How does that impact the workers and their time? We noticed how packaged things were opened, litter was left on shelves and how some goods were put any old place. How do we show care for others? What is the right thing to do? It was a great experience. The students were very responsible and responded to many expected social rules.
We had a great time exploring services and facilities in and around Deer Valley Mall. We learned about service stations, grocery stores, big box stores and shops that provide services and shopping, such as a pharmacy. We pointed out the differences between a fast food restaurant and a sit down restaurant. We noticed that a community usually houses medical centers, dental offices and pet care facilities. We then explored different shops with our large budget of 5 dollars. We had to weigh our options, comparison shop, talk with each other about how best to spend the money. We discussed how it feels to possibly wish you had used your money in a different way after seeing another child's spending decision. Everyone did an amazing job staying within their budget, understanding that they could not buy anything they wanted at this time. Everyone decided after visiting many shops that the Dollarama was the best place for a five dollar spending spree. We used mental math to best utilize the entire amount. We discussed how to remember to include a little extra room for tax.
