Our Wonderful Mindfulness group is making great posters to help the whole school community learn about strategies, to defeat unexpected negative thinking, that can get us into trouble. How do you stop a 1 problem from feeling like a 10 problem? Check out our Flexible Thinking Posters. They identify the villains that make our amygdala's pop up, and identify a strategy to calm your amygdala down so that you can be in your THINKING brain. http://www.makemegenius.com/ We looked at this website after our body group learned about the stomach and the process of digestion. Unfortunately I do not seem to be able to get links on this blog yet. I intend to learn how. Meanwhile you will have to type this address in yourself. It is a great website to learn from and the take a quiz to see what you remember. We also watched a video on nutrition by Slim Goodbody. He is an energetic teacher! You can youtube him as well. I am back from my wonderful Mindfulness Conference in San Diego. I am filled with gratitude and bursting with strategies to engage our learners in mindful behavior. It connects so well to our Mindful Body Workshop. Today we studied our lungs. We watched an interesting clip showing exactly how the lungs work and how they oxygenate our blood. That had a huge impact on helping students see the value of deep breathing, not only to regulate our brain but to fill our body with fresh oxygen. We used the five finger breathing exercise. Extend your hand in front of you and spread your fingers. Take the forefinger of your other hand and trace up and down your fingers...breathe in deeply on the way up...hold at the top of the finger and then exhale deeply on the way down your finger... inhale up...exhale down. Very relaxing and good for the lungs too.
We then discussed healthy and unhealthy things for our blood such as eating foods rich in antioxidants and not smoking later in life. We then puts lungs into our body cutouts. Some children chose to put one healthy lung and one unhealthy to demonstrate what impact our life choices have on us. Some could not bear to place an unhealthy lung in their wonderful bodies so they chose to put two healthy ones in. :-) A fun and educational website some of the students enjoyed yesterday was EDHEADS virtual brain surgery as we are learning so much about our brains. Warning! It is not for the squeamish. This site also has interesting games to teach us about weather as well as simple machines. Students in room 10 continue to learn about social responsibility, self regulation and the practice of WE instead of ME. We looked at a website called CHILDHEALING.com and took a test collectively called child healing.com/checklists/selfishnesschecklist.php. It led to some great conversations about our impact on others. Some children wanted to take it independently so there is the address.
