We are making Brain Jars in Room 10. The brain jar symbolizes how it feels when we experience strong emotions. Our minds become a swirl of thoughts and feelings that seem UNCONTROLLABLE! Using tools to help calm our swirling thoughts is an effective way to take control of our situation. As I tell the kiddos, "You can be the boss of your brain!" To make this particular tool we used: hot water, clear glue, mason jars, sparkles, gems and glycerine. Each sparkle color represented a feeling such as anger, fear, disappointment, worry and excitement. Each gem represented the amount of emotional burden we feel that we carry around with us each day. It becomes a tool when we use it as a way to calm our strong emotions. As we begin to escalate, we can take the jar and give it a vigorous shake. Then as we watch all the swirling sparkly objects spin about we can take deep breaths in and out. As the sparkles settle, we can begin to feel settled as well.
